It is based on the one that was likely created in Mesopotamia over 2500 years ago. The names of the zodiac signs we use today originate from the Greco-Roman culture. There star constellations were observed and given appropriate names.
The assignment of precious stones to the various signs of the zodiac has a tradition that goes back thousands of years, too.
